Hello all!

New piece... started today, finished today! Whew.

I recently had the opportunity to be reviewed by many art directors and editors at SVA's alumni portfolio review. While that was happening, I thought to myself that I want to create more conceptual pieces.

Well this is from my own observation of "white washing". The idea has been lingering for awhile, I just had to get it out, whether it was in a verbal debate form or an illustration. I thought illustration was a friendlier way to approach it.

I definately see white washing in hollywood - The Ring, My Sassy girl, The Last Airbender, and Dragonball the Movie(?). In a way, I feel like my childhood have been tempered with in a weird way when I see these movies... (what if someone ruined Harry Potter movies in a VERY BAD WAY). Also, since I happen to be from Korea, someone becoming or being "white washed" is heard very frequently.. Well I'll stop here before I start the debate.

Hello fello and new Ohgerians!

I've gone MIA for a while... i do that often! My time on this site is ending soon, and my work have grown in past year.

I read the discussion happening around WHY and WHAT about Ohger.

I joined when Ohger was very fresh, everyone was a stranger, and some how crawled in and said a shy hello. I had hopes to make my $50 dollar back with all the AWESOME JOBS (sarcasm) I get through Ohger. I am not going to deny that I wasnt disappointed to hear some say "those Ohger kids got it easy" but also seeing other Ohgerians who were published by NYT and Soojin Buzelli, there was a lesson learned: its not Ohger that gets me jobs, its my own effort and talent. Victo, Katie, Dadu, who have walked through Ohger are amazing, and they work hard to get the jobs they get, not by being on some blog.

After few beers and sushis later, I know Alyssa's middle name, Fish's choice of alcoholic beverage (kidding), and hadthe honor of having beer with Zimm. And Ohger has been my best excuse to approach them, because I'm extremely SHY. I havent made the decision whether or not I am going to do another round, but friendships and stories started here with other growing illustrators I probably had no chance of getting to know otherwise.

I thank Zimm for starting it with best of intentions to bring bright and young illustrators together in one spot.

Last night, I receieve an email from one of my teachers from SVA with this image. I immediately contacted the band about it, notifying them of infringement of my work, and they pointed at, no other than the designer they hired. They forwarded my email to the designer and they designer immediately replied with a sincere apology. She apparently didn't know that she could get in trouble for using an illustration in this manner.
For a project like this, I decided to give a benefit of doubt. Though some nasty thoughts did go through my head until a long sincere apology from the designer. All ended in good terms.

Just incase some designers didn't know (?) - Recieve permission and/or compensate for using any copyrighted material. What if we didn't purchase typefaces that you designed, plugged in our work with your layouts whenever we found appropriate.. and we got paid for it and you didn't get your share? Just sayin.

I Read this on Dave Trott's Blog

People are always asking me where advertising is headed.
Well, there are big changes happening in advertising right now.
We’ve never known anything like it before, have we?
New media gurus saying traditional advertising is dead.
The only possible future is social media.
Brand planners who know the only possible answer to any and every problem is to redefine the brand.
Creative directors who know that a new visual technique is the essential ingredient for any new ad campaign.
Everyone’s got a formula.
Everyone’s got a foolproof answer to what we should all be doing.
And yet, everyone knows we’ve never faced such uncertainty before.
In fact, I recently got hold of this letter.
It’s from the creative director of an ad agency, to the board of directors.
See if you can guess who.

“Dear ---------,

Our agency is getting succesful,
That’s something to be happy about.
But it’s something to worry about, too.
And I don’t mind telling you I’m damn worried.
I’m worried that we’re going to fall into the trap of worshipping techniques instead of substance.
That we’re going to be drowned by superficialities, instead of buoyed up by solid fundamentals.
I’m worried that hardening of the creative arteries is beginning to set in.
There are a lot of great technicians in advertising.
And unfortunately they talk the best game.
They are the scientists of advertising.
But there’s one little rub.
Advertising is fundamentally persuasion.
And persuasion happens not to be a science, but an art.
It’s that creative spark that I’m so jealous of for our agency, and that I’m so desperately fearful of losing.
I don’t want academicians.
I don’t want scientists.
I don’t want people who do the right things.
I want people who do inspiring things.
In the past year I must have interviewed about 80 people, writers and art directors.
Many of them were from the so-called ‘best’ agencies around.
It was appalling to see how few of these people were genuinely creative.
Sure they had advertising know-how.
Yes, they were up on the latest techniques.
But look beneath the techniques and what do you find?
A sameness, a mental weariness, a mediocrity of ideas.
All this is not to say a technique is unimportant.
Superior technical skill will make the good better.
But the danger is in a preoccupation with technical skill.
Or the mistaking of technical skill for creative ability.
The danger lies in the temptation to employ people who have a formula for advertising.
The danger lies in the natural tendency to go after people that will not make us stand out in competition, but rather make us look like all the others.
We must emerge as a distinctive personality.
We must develop our own philosophy and not have the advertising philosophy of others imposed upon us.

Yours Respectfully”

All the problems in that letter are the same problems we all face.
The over-reliance on formulas.
The proliferation of people who call themselves creative but aren’t.
The ability to talk a good game succeeding over actual ability.
It could have been written last week.
But it wasn’t.
It was written by Bill Bernbach when he was creative director of Grey Advertising.
Two years before he opened Doyle Dane Bernbach.

In fact, he wrote that letter the week I was born.

Also, some people ask me how much photoshop work I do for my illustrations. It sort of depends.
Since I graduated, I'm approaching fashion illustration- its something I've been wanting to do since I was young, and now I finally have an opportunity :)

But here ya go. Have fun!

With the whole Dana Blankenhorn issue that is going on right now, I thought it is approapriate to post about how to protect yourself (somewhat).

It was from digital portfolio class, and it was about encrypting copyright information in your images with Adobe Bridge..

I'd like to remind you its not the 'Official way' to copyright your work (you'd have to do it through Copyright.gov) but according to the teacher it would somewhat (better than nothing.. which means you can somewhat get more money in the courts i suppose) protect you because it will embed your info into the images you put up online.. so here we go:

i opened Adobe Bridge and selected a folder containing images

1. click on a picture

2. Make sure you are on METADATA tab and not the KEYWORDS tab. and click on IPTC Core.

3. Enter your information on Creator, Email, Website, Copyright Notice, and Right Usage Terms.

Make sure on Copyright Notice, ALL RIGHTS RESERVED is capitalized. Supposedly in it doesn't count in brazil if its not. :/
In Right Usage Terms, put in 'No usage without prior written consent.'

I just wrote it as i learned it! if i'm misinformed in anyway, comment away!

Hello Everyone! School and though of graduating put me on a scare these days. But exciting.

Ok! First image. I've been collaborating with Liz Chan and Hansen Hanggodo (Photographer) to create images for Liz's portfolio graphic design portfolio. The topic is 'Bad Hair Day' and we are doing a series of images combining surrealistic situations of bad hair day (that means more to come!) As you guys know, thats totally my thing so I took the offer and jumped right into it! And plus I've been wanting to do a photo/hand drawn collage illustration for awhile now. So it was a calling.

The second image is an assignment I did for Marcos Chin's Fashion illustration and beyond class. the topic is "fashion war".

Recently I've had the opportunity to go to New York's Fashion Week show. I went to the Anna Sui's show and I got inspired to do this image. I read on her motifs : Bad girl and Good girl. I've been lucky. Fashion War + Badgirl/Goodgirl= YAY!! Its a crappy photo of it for now, but finished and revised version will be coming soon!

I'm just as happy as I can be at the moment to be part of this community!

Let me start off with a little about myself.... I'm a senior in SVA, where i'm studying with Yuko Shimizu, T. Woodruff, Joo Chung, and Chang Park as my professors. I love it.

Well... If you've went through my portfolio already, you probably noticed that I have an obsession with drawing and painting hair... or hairy things.. Its really meditating to me and i just really really enjoy it.

ALSO! I hope i get to meet some of you guys at the American Illustration 28 party on the 12th!
