I'm continuing to build up my observational drawing portfolio and better my knowledge of anatomy. Eventually, I'd like to have a series that can be marketed toward publishers.

Roses
I've been working on a series of small paintings, from life, during the past couple months in my spare time. I just finished the roses one last week. Each is 5x7 and painted in acrylic. I'm hoping to try a lot of the traditional subject matter and really find out what I like to paint. The group will end up being a collection of sometimes cliche or sentimental elements that thematically will be different.

Inner City Baseball Heroes

Hello Everyone!

I thought I'd share some of the work from my master's thesis in my introduction. The other images can be seen in the gallery to the right, or with the process work on my blog: http://www.primaryhughes.blogspot.com/

These illustrations were designed to increase interest in baseball, among inner city children, by highlighting current Black baseball players and their life stories. The goal was to create excitement for a sport that has lost appeal in the Black community. Each image has visual layers designed to add to the player's life narrative.

I recently graduated from Kent State University in Ohio. I've been teaching foundation level illustration/drawing classes for a while as I completed my degree. Now, it's time for me to sink or swim and get my work out there!

Thanks for the opportunity to get involved in the community here!

Angel Rising
Torii Hunter of the Los Angeles Angels:

The image shows a strong and stable Hunter rising from a bad neighborhood with boarded up houses. Angel Stadium is seen flanking both sides of Hunter as if forming wings. Symbolically, the wings represent his ability to rise above the challenge of his childhood dealing with drugs, guns, and gangs. He is seen holding the ball and taking control of the situation by focusing on baseball and leading a good life. An overlayed baseball field diagram is seen as an additional layer of information weaving the image and color together. Home plate is located in the house from which Hunter springs. Second base is located on his nose and the baseball represents the pitcher's mound. First and Third base can be found on the facing of the stands where advertisements and info is displayed during the games.
