more posters!

So I've been doing a few posters lately, and I've had the remarkably good fortune to have these posters printed for actual use! For a student, opportunities like this are just so exciting, especially after months and months of doing pretend assignments for pretend clients. We're hungry for reality (perhaps foolishly, since we'll get plenty of that soon enough) and to get a taste of it is wonderful, so I'm just bursting with gratitude.

The above image was chosen, rather surprisingly, for my school's 2010 Open House invitation, which will be sent to high school students and high schools around the country. I say "surprisingly" because the other designs up for consideration were so very beautiful, and I figured that my socks were a bit too silly. Turns out, that's what they were looking for! Lucky me. I'm really excited to see this in print, or as the Brits would say, I'm "chuffed to bits" about it.

Another project that I was pleased to work on was another gig poster for Redbird Management (for whom I'd done that Liars poster a few weeks ago). There's something uniquely satisfying about working on a gig poster... I think it's the freedom of imagery and concept.

Wow. Someone please stop me from using so many cream backgrounds! I recently had this problem with turquoise, but I've always had a problem staying away from cream. Anyone ever have a similar issue? I fear that it's making my portfolio look ever-so-slightly boring.

Tina Fey!

She's a very difficult likeness, you know? I still think that I could use a few more cracks at it. Anyway, yes, this was for Katherine Streeter. It's our final class with her tomorrow, and I'm a bit sad about it! She's so nice and calming... Having Jon Krause as the next instructor in our workshop class certainly helps to soften the blow, though.
Happy Easter, guys! I'm already home, snuggling with my dog and listening to the chorus of neighboring spring peepers. It's about time...

So it's been a couple of months, and I've been busy, but I feel like it would be weird to just offer up a flood of new images, so I'm putting up one of my most recent creations.

This poster was commissioned by Redbird Management over in LA, and I'm pretty pleased with the result. I always seem to have a difficult time balancing the tightness of my pencil drawings with the rest of my imagery, but I found this juxtaposition of pencil rendering/graphic elements to be rather easy. I actually enjoyed it so much that I'm currently working on a companion piece to use a double-sided postcard promo. I should be done with it by next week or so...
Also, speaking of fresh, I've redesigned my website! The setup that I had before dated from last summer, which obviously means that it was ancient in 'internet time'. It was just really kitschy and had ittybitty thumbnails with color profiles that didn't do well in Firefox (thanks for the colors tip, Jim!), so I went the indexhibit route, and am really digging the results. I needed something clean, with tiny type and large images, and with the scroll-through setup, I feel like it's easier for folks to quickly consume my visuals. Also, updating content via indexhibit just could not be easier. All of that being said, let's see how long it takes for me to become absolutely sick of it!
Boy oh boy...

I've been faithfully following you guys since Ohger's fairly recent inception, so what can I say? It's an honor to finally be among you.
For a little bit of background: I'm a senior at UArts, and I couldn't be more excited to gradjeeate. I'm a blog fiend, and am pretty sure that I've seen everything that exists on the internet. I grew up just outside of West Chester, PA, I'm the youngest of four daughters, and our family dog looks like a mogwai. I have a nearly encyclopedic knowledge regarding butterflies and moths. Some of my favorite illustrators are Lauren Nassef, Silja Goetz, Jessica Hische, and Jim Tierney.
As for my own work, I might as well take you through my senior thesis work. These pieces will be on display here at the University of the Arts (along with the work of my very talented classmates) starting on April 6th, all the way through to April 20th, as part of the Illustration senior thesis exhibition / competition known as "The Ely".

So these photographs are some kind of awful, and I do apologize, but you get the idea, I hope? I chose to design/illustrate book covers (I've been addicted to book covers since junior year) and more specifically, redesigns of D. H. Lawrence's most famous works. These novels are full of romance, sensuality and passion, but are also as staunch and restrained as the English class system of the early 20th century. I had a lot of fun with these covers, playing with texture and color, as well as with symbolic imagery. It will be so satisfying to finally see them hung on the wall aside the work of my peers.
Right, so... there's me and a bit of my work.  Looking forward to sharing more, definitely. Thanks for having me on board!
To see more of me around the interwebz, feel free to check out my tumblr, flickr, and of course, my website. I get around.
